"So what about Geronimo?" Penny asked as we sat down at the small restaurant where we'd agreed to meet for lunch.
"I hope I won't bore you to death, but this is way out of Gero's league," I said. "This is state of the art programming with the latest techniques and interfaces, and he's stuck in the old ways. He just doesn't see what they want. He takes detours, gets halfway there and then he's lost."
"And you're not," she understood. "I'm so proud of you."
"How was your morning," I asked as we started eating.
Penny rolled her eyes and told me about court cases and problems with documents. "Exactly the things I was looking forward to," she said with a grin. "I don't understand why we don't hear from our discordial friend." She meant Discord, of course. "I don't trust it at all. He never stays silent for so long."
"I know. We heard about that ransom note and that's gone all silent too. Or do you think they paid up and never let the word out?"
"Who knows..."
For a while we were silent as the food got our attention. That was part of why we had come here. Again it hit me how much my life had changed, and I told her.
"Trust me, Pete. So has mine. For the better."
My heart made a little jump. "Yes. For the better."
Lunch was over much too soon but she had to get back to her office, and I had a new project to focus on.
Most of my afternoon went into reading what the customer wanted. They turned out to be a subsidiary of the Trumble corporation, with a specific service enabled into the system. Their own programmers would supply the code for that but all the info for the interfaces and functions was in the documentation. Then I went over what Geronimo had created so far, which was pathetic. There was hardly anything that was functional code. Most of the files had comments in it about what each part would have to do, and even that was a mess. Did he really work this way?
Ping...
'News channel'. That was all and it was from Penny. Quickly I switched on the TV.
"... the exact amount has not made public, but the family did bring out that a substantial amount of money had been handed over to the kidnappers of Mr and Mrs Glenmorra," an announcer said. "Details about the handover have not been disclosed either, so there is no way of saying where or how the transfer of funds has been done. The family hopes that the couple will return to their home again soon.So far the two have been missing for many days and the family have not received any sign of life."
Ping
'Hope they are still alive. This is how Discord works.'
I believed Penny, and secretly I wished she didn't know all this.
Why aren't you just a nice girl who works at Jones, Smith and Associates, without any of those super... but wait, Pete... girls who just work at lawyer firms don't usually land on your balcony in search of a shower.
